The movie I should be making is the making of this movie. This is the stuff that comedy is made of. Renowned cartoonist Dov Fedler got the opportunity in the 1980s to have a lifelong dream come true: Directing a movie. He had no idea how to do it, but wasn’t about to let that stop him.

This memoir is a humorous story of the pitfalls that open up as he works on a movie where the cast isn’t allowed to speak English to him while he speaks no isiZulu, the producer is just shy of being a crook, and where Dov has no idea the apartheid government is funding it. It dives into the pop culture of the time and also gives a funny, moving portrait of Dov’s life as he and his family both try and dictate what he can do with his life.

‘A sparkling “memoir of sorts” ... It’s serious and poignant and truly
very funny’ – Karin Schime
